A One Legged Man Just Kicked Me In The Ass

by Feb 13, 2019Reflections

William Earnest Henley was an influential 19th century English writer, who lived from 1849 to 1903. As the editor of several literary magazines, it is said that he had quite an impact on the culture during his time.

In 1875, Henley had one of his legs amputated, due to complications from tuberculosis. And shortly after, he was told the same had to be done to his other leg.

Instead of merely conceding, he enlisted the help of a local surgeon…and after several procedures, was able to save his other leg.

Can you imagine what it was like to go through ‘several surgical procedures’ in 1875? After having lost a leg?

It was during this difficult time that Henley penned the one literary piece that he is remembered for. The poem Invictus.

I read it three times this morning aloud, and I hope you enjoy it was much as I did.

Have a great day my friends, and know that whatever challenges you might face today, there is one undeniable truth.

You are invincible. You are unstoppable. You are unconquerable.

INVICTUS.

Out of the night which covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
