The Infinite Black Hole that is: YouTube

by Nov 15, 2019Reflections

I could spend all day on YouTube.  Literally. All. Day.

Sometimes I even look at it as a “problem”.  There’s just too much incredible content.

Admittedly, part of the ‘problem’…is my insatiable desire to watch/listen to that next compelling video or podcast, to watch that next ‘how-to’ or to explore the biography of a great leader.

It is my unending curiosity for the thoughts and perspective of others.  Especially others who I find inspirational in some way or fashion.

There is sooo much great information available that it can actually be overwhelming.

Sometimes it actually feels like a burden.

So as I thought about this this morning, my mind went to concepts like:

1. Create a finite list of ‘voices’ that I want to hear from each day or each week.
2. Start with those, and limit time spent searching to a minimum. (don’t meander)
3. Find time during travel or workout to hear these voices.
etc…

I was looking for ways to manage input.

Then a thought occurred to me that made me shake my head.

Looking to manage the input?  I CONTROL the input.  I am the input.  I am the lens through which I see.  I am the director of my mind’s eye.

Are you kidding me?

Overwhelmed because there’s “too much great stuff” out there?

Are you serious?

The sources of information and knowledge and perspective that exist, are a gift.  The abundant resources in front of me are miraculous.  Plain and simple.  And to determine anything otherwise is boo-hoo weakness.  It is a shallow view of the world that lacks perspective or humility or gratitude.  And I CONTROL that input.  I CONTROL that focus.  I CONTROL my outcomes.

And you know something else…every burden, every ‘problem’, every setback…is an opportunity

Sounds cliche, but it’s only cliche for those who aren’t strong enough to step up and do what’s necessary to find it.

Suck it up, Mr. “there’s too much great information…

You’ve got the sum total of human knowledge staring you in the face, waiting for a voice command.  You don’t–even–need–to–type.

Thanks YouTube.  You might be a black hole, inescapable and infinite (and a portal to other dimensions, but that’s another article)…but you’re not a burden, after all.  You’re a magnificent source of education and perspective, and I’m grateful to have you.

OK, I’m rambling a bit.  Need to focus.  Starting my day with purpose.
Hey, that’s probably a good YouTube search phrase.

Uh oh…
