Tonya Harding Had Dreams Too
I was thinking about BALANCE this morning.
I will often say, on a variety of subjects…that the key to most things is balance. So it got me thinking: Is there really anything that balance does not apply to? Are there certain things that you can’t have too much of?
What about things like:
Love
Inspiration
Peace
Laughter
Bacon
Well if you really dive into these glorious subjects, I think you’ll find that the need for balance is still there. I’ll prove it.
Love – Who remembers the boiling bunny?
Inspiration – Hey…Tonya Harding had dreams too.
Peace – Sometimes, you simply have to fight.
Laughter – the words snort or fart prove that balance is needed.
Bacon – I’ll get back to you.
Like most circumstances. your perspective drives your definition of balance. So I believe that even ‘balance’ is fluid. Even balance needs…balance.
When I’m considering my day and reviewing my goals, I’m often thinking about the action items to achieve those goals. I’m often thinking about how and where I can take massive action today…to drive towards those goals and milestones, and ultimately the feeling of accomplishment and impact.
I’m doing my best to motivate myself towards exceptionalism.
I’m creating the conditions whereby I’m committed to treating this day with urgency.
All of this, in my humble opinion…is positive. There is seemingly no net-negative in striving to make each day count. But there is a little voice in my head that always cries for balance.
That little voice is my son Reagan. Specifically it is a memory of something he once said.
After spending just a few hours of ‘alone time’…just he and I (out to a movie and the playground)…Reagan said, “this is the best day of my life.”.
He said it in a silly way…elongating the word “liiiiiiiiiffffe”. But what a reminder.
A reminder that the small things also matter. A reminder that priority is set by perspective. A reminder that accomplishment and impact and fulfillment isn’t always about world-changing goals.
A reminder that we are in control of our centered selves. Our priorities. Our inspiration. Our contentment.
I had done nothing that day besides give my boy some undivided attention.
I want to achieve the goals I’ve created for myself. I must. I want to pursue those goals with passion, each and every day. That’s why I’ve tried to take time to reflect each morning.
But I also want to make sure that I stay acutely aware that the seemingly smallest of things can also make a huge impact.
I want to be mindful that balance isn’t just about work vs. life. It isn’t just about working hard and playing hard. It isn’t just about a properly allocated investment portfolio.
All that helps in the grand scheme, and I will never stop aspiring to a better version of myself.
But I never want to lose sight that sometimes it is the smallest things…gestures, thoughts, moments…that bring out my best self.
