What Gives Us This Light

by Oct 22, 2022Poems & Quotes

What gives us this light
From beyond or from within?
What’s lost is found
What’s given is gone

Travails and triumphs
In an instant they blur
They fade in the light of what matters most
And they become a part of what matters least

All that we’ve sought is condensed to a moment
And what does that moment reveal?

What have we given?
What have we taken?
Who have we surrounded…
And who surrounds us now?

Why do we suffer at beginning and end?
While the center is filled with beautiful ignorance
Is this how it is meant to be?
Perilous yet perfect.

I have great questions for the keepers of fate
And I harbor a dark contempt for their conceit
I’m sure it’s the anger of countless before me
This isn’t the first time they’ve heard disdain

But my questions will not be answered
Not here, not now.
So I will step from my shadow and look for that light

The light that guides us
That reveals us, that warms us
That helps to temper what dies within us

What gives us this light?
From beyond or from within?

Perhaps I don’t deserve the answer.
Perhaps none of us do.
Perhaps it is our responsibility
To stop questioning the source, or the purpose or the intent

Perhaps these questions are merely to unite us
To guide us and to drive us
So that we might understand that this light is not ours alone
But is to be seen and shared, and most importantly… given
