Zion Williamson Is Trying to Steal My Girl

by Feb 22, 2019Reflections

For those of you who don’t know who Zion Williamson is…he’s currently the best college basketball player in the nation, and the consensus #1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

He’s 6’7″ tall, weighs over 280 pounds and has a vertical jump that’s nearly 45″.  That means that he can propel his gigantic body nearly four feet into the air.  He’s a “big” deal.  You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Well, a couple of days ago…he made headlines (again) not for his basketball skill, but for his basketball shoes.

When trying to change direction, Zion’s foot broke completely through the side of his shoe.  The shoe literally blew apart, separating from the sole. This caused Mr. Williamson (that’s what I call 18 year olds, when they’re 6’7″ 280) to slide awkwardly with his left foot, and he actually sprained his right knee as he tried to keep his balance.

Now it seems he’ll recover just fine, and I’m glad for that.  I look forward to watching him play in a Cavalier uniform next year.

But what I really wanted to share with you, are some of the things that have gone through my mind since this happened.

1. On Wednesday alone, there were over 2 Million Google searches for Zion Williamson.  I mean, if someone were trying to get readers to their blog, it would probably behoove them to have ‘Zion Williamson’ in a post title, and perhaps even have ‘Zion Williamson’ written several times in the article.

2. Millions of people are currently obsessing over a shredded Nike shoe and how this will affect their stock price, when literally tens of millions of people around the world have, no, shoes.  Yes, I’m somewhat guilty myself (obviously), but it certainly does make you think.

Check out this charity I found, https://soles4souls.org/.  Seems like a wonderful organization, and there are some eye-popping statistics to check out.  I think I’m going to find a way to either donate, or connect my Rotary club with these people.

3. Remember when everyone used to be outraged because Nike sold their shoes for $150.00, while apparently paying children 27 cents to work in miserable conditions for 15 hours days in countries like Bangladesh?

What happened to that?  Is that still going on?  Has our microwave culture simply moved past this?

It’s insane how short our collective attention span has become.  Fodder for another post, for sure.

4. Zion and I both wear a size 15 shoe.  And that, my friends, is where the similarities end.  (I did not say that these thoughts would all be insightful.)

5. In all likelihood, by this time next year, Zion Williamson will have been paid over $100 Million Dollars to wear Nike shoes.

Over one hundred million dollars, to wear shoes.

I’m fairly certain my girlfriend would enjoy a gig like that…so let’s just keep that on the down-low, shall we.
